Authorized mobile vendors’ market presence not significant

“With 98 percent of the market being taken up by smuggled mobiles, there is no room for authorized vendors to maneuver,” Saeed Eskandari told Mobna news agency
“The 25 percent import tariff on mobile set and lack of serious confrontation with illegal vendors has resulted in such a state of affairs,” he added.
He said authorized vendors now have only 2 percent of the market to cater for 46 million mobile phone users.
He warned that if the present tariff was not reduced from 25% to 10% the rest of the market would also fall into the hands of smugglers.
“There should be a law so that in future the tariff is not reduced so suddenly and without Parliament’s consent, only to find out four years later that it had resulted in the bankruptcy of some companies and redundancy of a great number of personnel,” he said.
