Plans for domestic mobile set production irrational: commerce expert

”The reason that the production of mobile sets in the country has been a failure is the absence of such technology in the country,” Ministry of Commerce’s Institute for Trade Studies & Research economist Bijan Safavi told Mobna news agency.
“No standard for the manufacture of set exists in the country, and those that already exist are replicas of foreign sets.” he added.
He said that telecommunication has grown in the country to such an extent that it has become a vital item in every Iranian household.
Safavi complained about the imbalance between the supply and demand for the product.
He suggested that the authorities should “abandon the idea” of the country manufacturing sets and instead focus on other sections of the industry.
He said that the priorities of the commerce ministries in every country are, “production promotion, exchange policies and export, but unfortunately in Iran it has been to set ever higher import tariffs.”
“In the developing countries, tariffs are being gradually phased out, and Iran which is trying to join WTO, had better follow suit.” Safavi said.
