the Cabinet’s decision last February to increase Latin SMS tariff while lowering the Persian tariff has not proceeded through legal routes with respect to the country’s Forth Development Plan.
Hassan Sahra-Pour, interviewed on IIRB’s news channel last night indicated that according to item 3 of the fourth Development Plan, raising or lowering Telecom tariff is pursued by a government bill being presented to parliament by October each year, and the tariff change is permissible once the bill has been voted by parliament.
He said that they would support the Persian SMS tariff reduction, but the increase in Latin SMS tariff has not gone through its legal routes.
He expressed hope that a way would be found for a more realistic Latin SMS tariff.
Ministry of Information & Communication Technology has announced that, as from next June, Latin SMS tariff will be raised from 140 Rial to 220 Rial, and Persian SMS tariff will be lowered from 140 Rial to 90 Rial.
However, experts believe that due to Persian SMS text taking up more characters that Latin text, the lowering of Persian SMS tariff will be negligible.
